GENEVA GARDEN CLUB MEETING MINUTES

May 3, 2016

President Debbie Notaro called the meeting to order at 12:14pm with a welcome to everyone here today at the end of the year May Luncheon.

Secretary’s Report:  Secretary Julie Brown asked for approval of the meeting minutes from April.  A motion was made by Ellen Bassett to approve and seconded by Julie Maturo.

Treasures Report:  Julie Maturo reported the account totals for the checking PayPal and Savings accounts.

Vice President’s Report:  Sheila Persinger said “cheers” to all and MaryAnn R. once again reminded us to get any new emails, etc. to Kristie D. as soon as possible.

Committee Reports:

Membership:  Kristie introduced our guests Sheavon Lambilotte, Director of Geneva Park District and Larry Gabriel, Superintendent of Parks, who once again thanked our club for the continued monetary donations being used for the replanting of trees in the parks throughout Geneva.  The GPD has been able to replace nearly 100 trees (35 trees with our donations) in 12 parks, many of which are Maples and Oaks.  There will be an Open House this Saturday at the greenhouse in Wheeler Park where the plants are grown for planting throughout the Geneva parks.  Kristie also recognized Darlene Larson on her 50 years of membership to GGC and to Gerry Nelson who has been a member since 1976.  Wow, thank you to both for their years of dedication and service.  Debbie Notaro’s mom, Roseann Sinkovitz and Theresa Jaeger’s mother in law, Norma, were also guests joining us today.

Scholarship:  Karen Bielski introduced this year’s winner, Geneva High School senior Emily Carbray, who will be studying at Oregon State University in the fall.  Emily is President of the Environmental Club and thankful for the opportunity to “extend the love of the earth” through her studies.  Congratulations Emily!

Ways and Means:  No report   Debbie did encourage everyone to stop by Gardenology Saturday May 14 to take part of this wonderful event and plan on purchasing a few terrific plants.  We will also have an opportunity at our Plant sale in June.

Communications:  Tammy will continue to send event reminders via SignUp Genius.

Hospitality:  Jane Martin welcomed everyone.  We have a full barn today, great turnout.  She introduced the Co-chairs of the Hostess Committee, Dianne Ramm and Noel Storm.  Great job ladies.  Dianne introduced her committee and thanked them all and appreciated everyone’s input.  The dessert table was beautiful and delicious!  One person at each table went home with a jar of honey as a door prize and several ladies were winners of the spectacular raffle.  Many local farms/businesses donated items for today’s raffle.   Kathleen Newhouse and Julie Maturo have volunteered to be the luncheon chairs for 2017!  Thank you ladies.

Always on Tuesday:  Kathy W. has copies available today of this summer’s schedule and will also be sent via email.  Linda B. will continue to send reminders.  There were a couple of dates that needed to be changed so will send a revised schedule.  We Grow Dreams (West Chicago) shopping outing will be May 17th, this is optional.  John Richter outing July 5th.  His gardens have been written up in magazines/newspapers and are truly a showcase.  We will plan on having snacks and drinks as well.  If you buy a plant from his garden ($15), he will in turn give 10%back to the club.

Special Committees/Other Business:  Thank you to the Nominating committee, Kathy W., Julie M. and Cheryl Gaydos for coming up with the 2016-17 slate of officers.

Plant Sale:  Julie M. reminded everyone the drop off day will be June 2nd for the plants we want to donate from our gardens.  Plants should have the common name as well as the Latin/botanical name and indicate if for sun, shade, etc.  Julie showed an example of a potted plant with our club label on it and the name stick in which to write the needed information of the plant.  These plants will range in price from $2.00 up to $10.00.

Debbie thanked Sheila P. as outgoing V.P. and Julie Brown as outgoing Secretary.  Both served for 2 years.  Co VP’s for 2016-17 are MaryAnn R. and Kathleen Newhouse, and Co-Secretaries are Marilyn Schave and Gail Ellenbaum.

Darlene Larson shared a personal toast in thanks for her noted club involvement and to Liz Gericke who passed away this past year.  Liz loved Garden Club and being an active member.

Sheila inducted Debbie N. as club President for the next 2 years.

All outgoing and incoming committee chairs were introduced and thanked and given a $5.00 off gift certificate for the plant sale at Gardenology or the Fancy Plant sale in June.

Garden Walk 2017:  Mary S. and Susan V. would love to have suggestions of potential homes for the walk emailed to them and let them know as soon as possible as they would like to have a list compiled by end of summer/early fall.  Member Tammy C. will be showcasing her lovely home on our walk.  Thank you Tammy.
