A public hearing is scheduled for May 8th at 9:45 am in the Government Center, Bldg. A to discuss proposed uses for Settlers Hill and Fabyan Forest Preserve, from Rt 25 to Kirk Road and Fabyan Parkway to the Union Pacific Railway, excluding the Fox Run development. The Fabyan Forest Preserve contains white and burr oaks that are reportedly hundreds of years old. Of concern is the potential damage to the trees from additional soil compaction as a result of the development of additional trails. Oak trees are sensitive to root compaction and may suffer from this development through the woods. Some of the proposals being considered include:

Clearing and designing mountain bike trails through Fabyan Forest Preserve for both pleasure riding and competitions.

Cutting down and clearing a portion of the Fabyan Forest Preserve to accommodate a “Ravinia-style Concert Venue”

An additional nine-hole golf course and a new driving range

A resort-type hotel/convention center and restaurant in the current location for the closed Kane County Jail

A cross-country course to be used for pleasure and for competitions at high school through college levels. Northwestern University has expressed an interest in using this course to host national NCAA competitions in the summer of 2014.

A First Tee Center Complex which will be utilized to teach golf and citizenship to underprivileged children, in both indoor and outdoor venues

A second, stand-alone restaurant

An observatory

Down-hill and cross-country skiing

Two additional concert venues

A fishing pond and other water interests

Interior roads and biking trails that would interconnect all the venues and which would ultimately lead to the river walk across Route 25. These interior roads would be accessed by several entrances into the complex from Route 25, Fabyan Parkway, and Kirk Road

Adding historic buildings to create a village around the historic stone house on Fabyan Parkway

A rendering of the proposals can be found on http://forlandssake.org/
